Corruption of the Text
(Interrogations of inheritance and invocations of hope).

Artist Statement

The world isn’t how I thought it was. It’s stranger. I realise this now.

The art work has become interrogations of inheritance and invocations of hope. An unravelling of ideas, beliefs, boundaries, monsters and the self. A forensic inspection of the minutia, that which constitutes the fabric of our legacies.

Language is ubiquitous (almost). It could be described as the architecture of our world. Yet it is imperfect. Hierarchy, censorship, sanitisation and structural violence are exerted by language and the text. Knowing the mechanisms is perhaps our only escape.

So I like to test the ramshackle fences that can constitute our boundaries. Making art work is an invocation, intent and desire are held in the materials and construction. Aspiring for transcendence over distance, dislocation and restraint. An alchemy of transformation, to relocate myself, to find a geography that is not dictated by the grid.

Information

Based in London, Justin is a sculptor working primarily with metal casting, fabrication and image making as a part of an investigative practice. He uses materials and invented techniques to make, wrestle, and examine; with the desire to understand a little better.
